Providing patients comprehensive cardiovascular care with state-of-the-art technology

About Amarillo Heart Group

History

Amarillo Heart Group was founded in 1992 by B. Ronald Fortner, M.D. and Joaquin Martinez-Arraras, M.D. to serve the residents of Amarillo and the outlying regions. While keeping the future of healthcare in America closely in mind, Dr. Fortner and Dr. Martinez set on a course to revolutionize outpatient cardiology in the panhandle. Their idea was to insure cost effective and easily accessible care for patients and referring physicians.

To accomplish these goals the doctors decided to incorporate a non invasive laboratory within the clinic. In September of 1993, the lab became a reality and offers a wide range of diagnostic studies. Patients can now come to the office for most of their testing to avoid the paperwork and congestion associated with area hospitals where testing was previously conducted. In addition to this ease of access to care, the patients have become more educated about their course of care and have shown great trust in our cardiologists. We now have cardiologists that specialize in most areas, including critical care, cardiac catheterization, interventional procedures, electrophysiology, ablations, pacing, nuclear medicine, echocardiography, and more. As Amarillo Heart Group has grown, so has the staff of specialized cardiologists.

In 1998, Amarillo Heart Group moved to a newly constructed medical office building. The 27,000 square foot building was designed to accommodate the growth of the practice in a patient friendly setting.

Because of the commitment of our cardiologists and staff to provide outstanding care to our patients, Amarillo Heart Group continues to experience strong growth and success.

Our Mission

The foundation of Amarillo Heart Group rests upon being a cardiology practice capable of providing comprehensive, state-of-the-art, high-quality cardiovascular care for the residents of the Texas Panhandle, Western Oklahoma and Eastern New Mexico. Amarillo Heart Group's goal is to ensure that the services are cost effective and easily accessible for patients and referring physicians by establishing a comprehensive heart center facility in Amarillo and satellite clinics throughout the entire service area. Amarillo Heart Group will seek to reduce the number of deaths due to cardiovascular disease in the area through programs of education, prevention, early detection, and treatment, thus enhancing the quality of life and cardiovascular health for residents of the region.

Your Cardiovascular Health Care Team

Amarillo Heart Group is a significant medical resource for the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. As the health care needs of the Panhandle have grown, the number of cardiologists at the clinic has been increased to include cardiologists who specialize in treating many different cardiovascular conditions. There are cardiologists available in several areas of specialty at Amarillo Heart Group. They have specialized training and experience in critical care of heart patients, cardiac catheterization, angioplasty, electrophysiology, stress testing, echocardiography and many other tests and procedures related to the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Cardiologists specialized training includes four years of medical school, three or more years of residency in internal medicine, and two or more years of specialized training in cardiology.

Diagnostic Testing

Amarillo Heart Group uses advanced technology to perform non-invasive studies. This state-of-the-art technology includes a wide range of ultrasound services which enables us to examine the heart and important blood vessels of the body. In our office Nuclear Cardiology Department, we evaluate the flow of blood to the heart walls. This tells us a great deal about the effects of hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) - still a number one cause of death in this country.
